Parent Information and Accessing Parenting Information As a result of the Nebraska SPRING project, the Family Resource Center Coalition of Nebraska operates a Parent Information and Resource Center (PIRC). This includes the Family Resource Line, a statewide toll-free number that parents can call for information on parenting and other family issues, as well as referrals to services in their communities. It also includes access to the Early Childhood Training Centers Media Center, a statewide free-loan library of print, audio and video materials geared to parents and professionals working with parents. Items can be checked out through the ECTC Media Center online or by calling the Family Resource Line at 888.550.3722. In todays world, more and more parents and children are accessing the Internet in the workplace, classroom and home. The on-line world of the Internet can serve as an important educational tool that enhances learning in every arena. It can be utilized to help understand childrens developmental needs, to plan strategies for optimal parental involvement, to enhance childrens education or to tap the most up-to-date learning resources. Listed below are web sites that contain material that may be useful to parents and children. Parents are advised to monitor a childs use of the Internet and to explain to the child what information is safe to access and/or share.
Early Connections Technology in Early Childhood Education Provides resources and information on the appropriate and effective use of technology with young children. Early Connections provides a basic understanding of young childrens learning development, then connects technology to those essential learning skills. A website for parents dedicated to childrens learning. Links include: Ages and Grades, Activities, News and Hot Topics, School Help, Parenting Challenges, Special Needs, Family Finance, What Works, Expert Advice, Message Boards. Weekly on-line newsletters covering these topics available through this site. Offers inspiring and encouraging stories about fathering in a variety of challenging circumstances. Intended for use by fathers and family professionals. Florida Center for Parent Involvement This series of materials provides a wealth of current information for both parents and providers; the complete set of resources can be obtained in PDF format on the Department of Child and Family Studies Website at http://www.fmhi.usf.edu/cfs/dares/fcpi/. The series' themes include: Family Empowerment Parent Involvement Parenting Support School Readiness Violence in the Lives of Children Transition to Kindergarten. How to Behave So Your Children Will, Too! Based on book with same name by Dr. Sal Severe; a collection of entertaining stories and practical ideas gathered from real parents. Provides the latest information on physical, mental and emotional health for kids, teens and parents. National Parent Information Network A collection of annotated, categorized information, culled from ERIC, the federally funded Educational Resource Information Center. The NPIN offers news, book review, a Parents AskERIC feature, and discussions. Emphasis is on professional as well as parental aspects of child development. It contains links to other parent resources. Nebraska Extension Publications This site offers a variety of helpful information under Family Life heading. Categories include: Preschool, Childhood, Adolescence and Youth, Adulthood and Aging, Relationships, Management, Parenting. Parents Guide to the Internet Available in English and Spanish.
