Programs
& Services
Caring Start
Caring Start is a Child
Development Center licensed by the State of Nebraska. We meet and
follow all state guidelines and requirements. Caring Start is totally
integrated with all other Wakefield Family Resource Center programs.
We accept children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old. The Center is open
Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Children are grouped
by age level. One or two primary teachers provide care. Children eat
in their classrooms and we serve all meals and snacks family style.
This program is funded by your payment. A State subsidy is possible
if your family qualifies. For more information, contact Wakefield
FRC at 402.287.2521.
Wakefield FRC utilizes the High Scope curriculum in
all of its classrooms. The premise behind this curriculum is that children learn better by
doing. Each child is evaluated upon their arrival and the teacher then assists in their
learning based on this evaluation. All learning is done through play. Children move at
their own pace. High Scope also focuses on Conflict Resolution. This enables children to
work out their problems through positive communication.
Community Food Pantry
The pantry provides emergency food to families.
Even Start Family Literacy
This program is designed to support
parents as their children's first teachers. Even Start is a family literacy program built
around the basic components of early childhood education, adult literacy (or Adult Basic
Education or English as a Second Language), and family or parenting education. Program
services are both center and home based. While children attend developmentally appropriate
programs, parents attend sessions to improve their basic education skills. A part of every
family's day includes parent and child time in which the parent follows the child's
lead within the classroom.
Even Start is a collaborative program, with area
organizations providing direct services. Begun in 1988, the program helps break the cycle
of poverty and illiteracy by creating a unified family literacy program that improves
low-income families' educational opportunities. The Nebraska Department of Education funds
Even Start. The Wayne/Dixon County Even Start Program is here for you and your family all
year, all the time.
Great Start
Great Start is a local program providing
comprehensive developmental services to low-income, migrant, pre-school children ages 4-5.
The program's primary purpose is to provide literacy skills to children eligible to enter
kindergarten within the next school year. This full time preschool program meets 8:30 a.m.
to 4:00 p.m. every day year round. Children who meet eligibility requirements may attend
at no cost to their family. Call Wakefield FRC (402.287.2521) to receive additional
information or request an application.
Following both the Head Start
guidelines and the design of other programs in the state, Great Start is fully integrated
into the child development center. The program provides diverse services to meet the goals
of the four component areas:
Education. Every child receives a variety of learning experiences to foster
intellectual, social, and emotional growth.
Health. Every child is involved in a comprehensive health program.
Parent Involvement. An essential part of the program is the involvement of parents in
parent education, program planning, and operating activities.
Social Services. Specific services are geared to each family after its needs are
determined.
This program began in spring 2000
with financial assistance from the Gardner Foundation and M.G. Waldbaum Inc. It continues
with funding from Wakefield Community Schools and the Nebraska Department of Education.
Green Thumb
Green Thumb is a job training and placement program
for low-income older adults.
Jump Start
Jump Start is a preschool program for
children ages 3-5 years old. The program is offered Monday through Friday in morning or
afternoon sessions, year round. Your family may choose the days that best suit your
schedule. The Jump Start Preschool program works closely with Wakefield Community Schools
to provide a smooth transition into Kindergarten. As with Caring Start, Jump Start uses
the High Scope curriculum. This program is funded by your payment. A State subsidy is possible
if your family qualifies. For more information, contact Wakefield FRC at 402.287.2521.
Kid's Cornerstone
This before and after school care program
provides a fun, safe environment for children. The program is also available full day when
school is out of session. Bus transportation is provided between the Center and the
school. Activities include gym use, rollerblading, bumper pool, foosball, volleyball,
computers, outdoor sports, arts and crafts projects, movies, and hanging out. This program
is funded by your payment. A State subsidy is possible if your family qualifies. For more
information, contact Wakefield FRC at 402.287.2521.
Kindermusik
Teaching children to be creators not just
consumers of music
Parenting Education Classes
Special Start
Special Start is designed to integrate
children ages 3-5 with special needs into the regular Wakefield FRC preschool program. All
children are combined in the classroom so there are no distinctions. ESU #1 and Wakefield
Community Schools provide Early Childhood Specialists three days a week in the classroom
to assist the teachers and provide the technical assistance necessary for the optimal
education of your child. To apply, contact your school superintendent, ESU #1 or Wakefield
FRC (402.287.2521). Professionals will do testing prior to placement. Wakefield Community Schools
and the State of Nebraska fund the program. As with Caring Start, Special Start utilizes
the High Scope curriculum. You
and the Wakefield FRC staff determine the school schedule.
School to Career
Subsidies from Nebraska Heath and Human Services
Wakefield FRC recognizes that many families
cannot afford quality early childhood programs. For this reason, we cooperate with the
State of Nebraska to provide program subsidies to area families. To find out if your
family qualifies, contact Wakefield FRC at 402.287.2521.
Super Clinics
Clinics include WIC, Immunizations, and Mother &
