Nebraska SPRING
Through Nebraska SPRING, the Urban League Family Resource Center can access the Parent Information and Resource Center (PIRC). The PIRC includes the Family Resource Line and access to the Early Childhood Training Center Media Center. The Media Center's numerous and varied materials are available on a free-loan basis. In addition to the above support, the Urban League Family Resource Center is one of four parent/community demonstration projects funded by Nebraska SPRING through the Department of Education Parent Information and Resource Center program. These funds provide partial support to the Urban League’s Bridge Builders program.
Bridge Builders is a family literacy program. It helps families, schools, and the community work together so children can do a good job in school. A literacy counselor works with schools, parents and children in the north Omaha area to improve parenting skills, child literacy and school success. A key component of this project is the America Reads Mentoring Program. During July and August, volunteer mentors spend one hour reading to an elementary student.
What will Bridge Builders do for you as a parent?
- You will feel more comfortable helping your child with homework, reading to him/her, getting him/her to sleep and wake up on time, talking to school teachers, and more.
- It answers the question, "What can I do to help my child succeed in school?"
- It gives you ways to teach your child that education and school are very important!
