About the Northeast Family Center |
|
It was June, 1988 that the initial planning began for the Family Resource
Center. The planning began when the Nebraska Department of Social Services
(DSS) approached University Place Community Organization (UPCO) leaders to
discuss changes taking place on the campus of the Nebraska Center for Children
and Youth, where Whitehall is located. UPCO had been concerned for several
years about the needs of families within the University Place neighborhood and
surrounding areas of Northeast Lincoln.
In July, 1989, UPCO signed a contract with the State
of Nebraska for the use of the historic Whitehall Mansion and by April, 1990,
the contract between UPCO and the DSS to operate a family resource center was
signed. During the planning phase of the project, both UPCO and personnel from the DSS acquired
funding commitments for the project from the Woods Charitable Fund, the Lincoln
Foundation, the Community Development Block Grant program of the city of
Lincoln, and other private donations. The funding and commitment of the
DSS enabled UPCO to open the doors of the Family Resource Center in July, 1990.

Northeast Family Center (NFC) developed its own Board,
but remained under the UPCO umbrella until 1993. That year, DSS expanded its
interest in Family Resource Centers and with NFC developed Lincoln/Lancaster
County Family Resource Centers Inc. (LLCFRC). Along with the developing West
Lincoln Family Resource Center, NFC joined this larger network. From 1993 to
1997, Northeast Family Center remained in the LLCFRC network, with a
Committee of Management as a governing board and a Site Coordinator for
staff leadership.
Moving a step further in its development, Northeast
Family Center obtained its own 501(c)(3) non-profit status in May 1997. It
now had an empowered Board of Directors and an Executive Director. As Northeast Family Center enters the new millennium, it
has staff with expertise in social work, early childhood, and child care.
The Center continues to offer the services of several community agencies
wishing to bring these services to the neighborhood. We are making a positive change in the community.

|
| Today, more than ever, children need adults who will listen
and guide them. They need mentors and good role models. The
Northeast Family Center is a non-profit organization that provides family
support through parenting education, early childhood programs, and encouragement
to families with young and school-age children. |

|
| The Northeast Family Center is located in the historic
old Havelock School building. The large preschool and Early
Learning Center daycare
rooms
provide an excellent setting for our family support programs. That
atmosphere, along with the dedication of our volunteers and staff, are what make
everyone at the center feel like family |

|
We are committed to building strong families and vital
Northeast neighborhoods by educating, supporting, and advocating for the
diverse children and families of our community.
